Tibetan Phurba
Since Dalai Lama’s coming to India in 1959 we can find an increase in the number of Tibetan settlements in the Himalayan states of India. This magnificent Tibetan Phurba is handcrafted by Tibetan artisans from Uttarakhand. The three Buddha heads on the handle ensures that whichever way the blade is turned the Buddha head is always facing the user. The exquisitely carved stand adds to the beauty of this piece which makes for an excellent collector’s item.
The three-pronged ritual dagger commonly known as Phurba has a very important role to play in Tibetan Buddhism. It is said that the Padmasambhava invented the Phurba and used it to consecrate the soil during the construction of the Samye Monastery back in the 8th c AD. Till date the Phurba or the ‘Magic Dagger’ is used in a number of Tibetan rituals. The three prongs of the Phurba is representative of the three spirit worlds while the dagger itself is a representation of the axis of these three worlds. The three prongs are also meant to transform the three negative energies- ignorance, aversion and attachment. The handle of the Phurba stands for ‘wisdom’ while the blade itself stands for ‘method’. The Phurba is used in a large number of Buddhist ceremonies and practitioners of Tantric Buddhism are known to frequently use it because of its power to keep the demons in place.
