Lota is a common Hindi word which means a vessal to store water – widely used in religious rituals at home and in temples. Even today, many households in India use copper vessels or lotas to store drinking water owing to its health benefits. This hand-crafted Sriganesh ji lota has been made by the coppersmiths, known as the Tamta community, living in Bageshwar in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. There are thousands of temples strewn across Uttarakhand, also called Devbhoomi, where aarti and puja is performed daily. These hand-beaten copper lotas are used in those rituals. This lota has special significance in the life of every Hindu family in the country and is a small testimony of the hard work of the craftsmen
