A Gagar or Gaggar is a traditional jug-like vessel from Uttarakhand. It comes in various sizes, from a small handy Gagar used during puja rituals to large ones that people of this Himalayan region use for storing drinking water. Hand-made copper Gagar has been made by Tamta community from Bageshwar, which is famous for it’s copper works. Traditionally, Indian families believe that drinking water store overnight in copper vessels is good for health, which is why it is widely used as common household item. The smaller ones are used in the religious rituals like during elaborate pujas – often as a replacement of the lota. The design on this Gagar, or the square motifs all over it, are handbeaten by the coppersmith with a hammer.
