Pichoda or pichhaura is a dupatta (odhni or chunari) that every woman in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand owns. It has a very unique design that is characterised by its saffron base colour with design motifs on it in red or maroon. This fabulous piece of garment is a symbol of a married woman and traditionally worn during festivals or social gatherings.
The Pichoda is worn over the saree but these days, women sport it over a salwar-kurta as well. It has red polka dots on most part of the garment, except in the centre which has a main feature pattern like the swastika, a conch shell, sun and a variety of floral or paisley patterns, with a zari or jhallar lace on its borders.
A truly fantastic souvenir from Uttarakhand!
